SANTA CRUZ -- Bobbing about 100 yards offshore under a blue sky dusted with fog, nearly two dozen surfers scooped their hands beneath their boards Monday afternoon and splashed water high up into the air, a time-honored Hawaiian tradition they were using to mark the defining moment in Surf City.

The first time Athline Clark of Kaneohe tried stand-up paddle surfing, she was hooked. Now she has to get out to the ocean to paddle a few times a week or else she'll feel like a part of her life is missing.

We always knew our friend Dave Boehne had a screw or two loose; but Stand Up Paddling down the LA river and getting piped at Echo Park?
